News that the sequel to Constantine is still in the pipeline appears to mean one thing to millennials and another to Gen Z fans.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Warner Bros. announced that it’s going ahead with its plans to make Constantine 2, a film Keanu Reeves has been trying to bring to fruition since he played John Constantine in the original back in the early 2000s.
However, a generation of Constantine fans has been born and raised since then, and one of them took to Reddit to show that Gen Z associates the iconic demon slayer with someone else entirely.
LowerButYetHigher took to the r/DC_Cinematic subreddit to ask if anyone else was on board with a Constantine TV series or movie starring Matt Ryan. The Welsh actor played the part on the NBC series and in the DC animated spin-off Constantine: City of Demons.
Incredibly, few people in the thread connect Keanu Reeves with the role of John Constantine anymore. One Redditor sees Ryan as the “perfect Constantine.”
Other fans shared the view and said it would be difficult to see anyone other than Ryan in the role of Constantine.
One Redditor was aware of Reeves’ portrayal of Constantine. However, they still preferred Ryan in the part.
Another fan was familiar with Reeves’s iteration, but found it lackluster. They felt that Ryan’s performance outshone The Matrix star.
Others had a different take. They praised Ryan as an actor but criticized the writing on The CW version. In their view, Reeves is more believable in the role of Constantine, and they are excited about the upcoming film.
It sounds like Reeves has his work cut out for him as he revisits what he has described as his favorite role. However, anyone familiar with the trajectory of his career knows that his singular talent has been proving people wrong for decades.
The original Constantine movie is streaming on HBO Max.
