Deadpool 2 Writers Say Vanessa Could Become Copycat

Deadpool 2 arguably gives Morena Baccarin's Vanessa the short shrift as the character is killed off even before the opening credits start rolling. That said, thanks to the handy plot device of time travel, Wade Wilson's able to bring his fiancee back to life during the post-credits scenes. At first, we didn't even know if this was in canon with the rest of the film, but it was later confirmed that it is.

Deadpool 2 arguably gives Morena Baccarin’s Vanessa the short shrift, as the character’s killed off even before the opening credits start rolling. That said, thanks to the handy plot device of time travel, Wade Wilson’s able to bring his fiancee back to life during the post-credits scene. At first, we didn’t even know if this was in canon with the rest of the film, but it was later confirmed that it is.

What’s more, now that Vanessa’s been resurrected, the writers of Deadpool 2 have teased that the character might be brought more in line with her comic book counterpart in future outings. Scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were talking to CBR when the topic of Vanessa’s return came up, which led Reese to reveal that they might transform her into Copycat somewhere down the line.

“Now we can bring her back as Copycat, and Morena [Baccarin] was very thrilled when she got the call. ‘We got the time machine working, and you’re still alive!’ ‘I knew it!’ It was really funny.”

In the comics, Vanessa isn’t a human but rather a mutant with the ability to mimic other mutant’s powers. Reese and Wernick have previously talked about how they considered introducing her abilities in the first Deadpool, but ultimately decided to simplify things. Now, it seems they’re interested in exploring more facets of Vanessa’s character.

If this does happen in the future, it’s possible that she could even join DP’s mutant hero team. As you probably know, Deadpool 3 is being put on hold in favor of spinoff X-ForceBut seeing as the group Wade forms in Deadpool 2 were all killed off already, he’ll need some new recruits. With that in mind, maybe his girlfriend will get to join in on the action? Let’s hope so, as it would certainly allow Morena Baccarin a better wedge of the screen time.
