Deadpool fans rejoice, because the long-gestating film featuring the Merc with a Mouth finally has a release date! 20th Century Fox has just announced that the much-anticipated flick will hit theaters on February 12th, 2016.

Described as an X-Men spin-off, the film will be directed by Tim Miller (who hasn’t helmed a feature yet, but directed the awesome Deadpool test footage that leaked this summer). Ryan Reynolds has long been attached to the role, though according to THR, no deal is currently set. Although, I can’t imagine at this point that someone else would take the part.

This Deadpool news comes after years of fan outcry about the character’s lack of a feature film, which only intensified when that test footage hit the web. Deadpool is an incredibly popular property, but the darker aspects of his story and personality make a feature film a risky proposition for the studio. Whether or not the movie ends up with an R-rating, or a more commercially friendly PG-13 remains to be seen. But we’re hoping they go all out with this one.

Tell us, Deadpool fans, are you happy to hear about the film finally getting a release date? And would you still like to see Ryan Reynolds in the title role?
