Deadpool is expected to do big business (especially for an R-rated superhero movie) when it hits theaters this weekend, and analysts have predicted a very successful box office run overall – so it was probably only a matter of time before we got word on a sequel. And according to THR, that time is now.
The trade reports that the film’s writing team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are currently at work on the script for the sequel, and though director Tim Miller hasn’t officially signed on to return just yet, the studio is “intent on keeping the creative team together.”
[zergpaid]That means, of course, that Ryan Reynolds is also expected to reprise the lead role of the Merc With a Mouth. He did recently say that he’d happily play the character forever, after all, so there’s no reason to think that he wouldn’t be back for the sequel.
As for the other cast members, no one has been confirmed just yet, but you can bet that both T.J. Miller and Morena Baccarin will be returning in some capacity.
Reynolds, along with Miller, Reese and Wernick, fought tooth and nail to get this film made, so it’s great to see that their hard work seems to have paid off. Of course, the exact box office haul remains to be seen, but given that Deadpool is a hit with critics, there’s no reason to think that Fox won’t make a healthy profit off of it. Which means that we can expect the character to stick around for the foreseeable future.
