Disney Plus just made a major dent in its relationship with its subscribers following dozens of the streamer’s original titles being permanently removed from its library as of May 26. With such high-profile productions as the Willow TV series being among them — and even MCU-adjacent series not getting let off the hook — users just can’t trust that the Mouse House will keep their favorite content available for the long-term.
And sadly those cynical feelings are rather overshadowing the release of the first trailer for the streamer’s next original movie. Musical comedy World’s Best, from director Roshan Sethi, tells the unlikely but charming story of 12-year-old math genius Prem Patel (Manny Magnus) who discovers that his late father was a famous rapper and so sets out to make his own name in the music industry. You can catch the trailer for the film, coming to streaming this June, above.
While World’s Best deserves its shot in the spotlight for positive reasons, unfortunately many of the responses to it on Twitter follow the same pattern: fans still stinging from the recent purge are convinced it’s only a matter of time before this film joins those other removed titles in the streaming afterlife.
As the above tweet reminds us, the decision to remove a total of 50 titles across Disney Plus and Hulu was part of the studio’s company-wide quest to cut costs, even if it means consigning multiple productions to never being seen again and potentially burning bridges with creators in the process. It should be stressed that no signs are pointing to World’s Best suffering this fate at this juncture, but with its lower brand recognition and similar themes to other axed films like Better Nate Than Ever and Stargirl, fans may have reason to be concerned for it.
To ensure World’s Best escapes the next inevitable Disney Plus purge, catch it upon its streaming premiere on Friday, June 23.
