Well, it looks like Disney’s long awaited third trip into the Grid won’t be coming to theaters after all. Despite reports that filming would begin in the fall, the studio has officially put the kibosh on Tron 3

The not all too surprising news comes from THR, who didn’t give a reason for the abrupt cancellation. Tron: Legacy had a tepid reception from both fans and critics when it arrived in 2010, 28 years after the original sci-fi classic. Disney appeared to be dragging its feet on getting the third entry off the ground, and though Tron: Legacy stars Olivia Wilde and Garrett Hedlund were expected to return – once again under the direction of Joseph Kosinski – the film never seemed like a sure bet.

THR cites that Tomorrowland‘s disappointing reception could be one of the reasons that Tron 3 got the axe, while the studio’s crowded slate of live-action fairy tale re-imaginings could have taken priority over another potentially risky science fiction tentpole. Either way, Tron 3 will not be happening, at least not anytime soon.

Tell us, are you disappointed that Tron 3 was de-rezzed by Disney? Or did you feel that this news was inevitable? Leave your thoughts in the comments below.
