With Iron Man 3 on the verge of its cinematic debut, Don Cheadle – A.K.A. Colonel James Rhodes/War Machine – spoke about the future of his character within Marvel’s colossal universe. The actor even spoke about the possibilities of a Rhodey cameo in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and, in particular, The Avengers 2.

Check out what he had to say about The Avengers 2 to Collider below:

“I know that [there are] conversations that have been happening, so we’ll see what happens. If that’s able to happen and it makes sense for the story, I’m sure it’ll happen, and if not it’s fine. It has to work within the world and sort of the mythology of the whole Marvel universe.”

While Cheadle doesn’t nail down any specific facts, we do know that Joss Whedon is toiling away with the script for the sequel at the minute, so now would be as good a time as any to integrate a War Machine cameo. Having replaced Terrence Howard between the first two Iron Man films, Cheadle seems enthusiastic about the world-building process that Kevin Feige and his creative team are working on over at Marvel and understands that his proposed appearance would have to feel organic to each narrative. Not only did Cheadle talk about The Avengers 2, he also spoke candidly about next year’s Captain America: The Winter Soldier.

“I think I’m gonna go to the set, so maybe if my suit is in the trunk I’ll just walk on”

Admittedly, the actor seems to be flippant about his chances of appearing in the latter Marvel film, but a War Machine appearance in The Avengers 2 could be an interesting concept for Whedon to consider. Given that Iron Man is the biggest piece on Marvel’s chess board – in terms of popularity, at least – and that the original made space for Pepper Potts, a James Rhodes cameo isn’t exactly outside the realm of possibility.

What we know for sure, though, is that Marvel will be kicking off Phase 2 in style with this month’s Iron Man 3 which will be released May 3rd, 2013 in the States. On the other hand, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and The Avengers 2 will open on April 4th, 2014 and May 1st, 2015, respectively.
