Logan brought Wolverine’s story to a very definitive close, but most fans and critics came out of the movie hoping to see more of Dafne Keen as the ferocious X-23. In the comic books, she becomes the new Wolverine following her father’s death and the X-Men Cinematic Universe taking us down a similar path surely makes sense.
As a result, there’s been a lot of speculation that we could see X-23 show up in everything from New Mutants to X-Force and even a future instalment in the X-Men franchise. However, producer Hutch Parker has now revealed that the most likely destination for the character will be a solo outing of her own.
“Yeah, I mean, look — I don’t know definitively, but in terms of the stuff we’ve been talking about, it’s not sort of slipping her into the background of another movie. It’s looking at that character, which is a great character and has a pretty interesting run within the comics, to find a story that we think she could carry or certainly be kind of majorly significant within. That’s the only kind of thing that Jim as a storyteller, a filmmaker… that’s the way his sort of process works. And the way his mind works in terms of what he would aspire to. Which isn’t to say that the studio couldn’t have a conversation about something else, but the one that we’ve been kind of discussing loosely and kicking around is more likely to be its own film.”
While there’s no denying that an X-23 movie would be fun, leaving her out of another franchise seems like a real wasted opportunity. She’d fit perfectly into X-Force, for example, and starring in a release like that could make selling a solo adventure a lot easier as it would really get moviegoers invested in the clawed hero.
It sounds like Fox isn’t 100% sure about what they want to do with her just yet, and we know that anything could happen, so it may just be a case of waiting and seeing when it comes to X-23. There’s no getting around the fact that Keen stole the show in Logan though, so you’d best believe that the character definitely has a future on the big screen in the X-Men Cinematic Universe.
