Occasionally Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson takes some time to answer questions from fans on Twitter. He did another one of those sessions recently and Tweeted what appears to be confirmation of a role in an upcoming DC movie for Warner Bros. He also indicated that production will begin this year, though details are sparse past that.
We just had a big meeting w/ Warner Bros CEO re: @DCComics 2014 we will partner up and create the cool bad assery. #RockTalk @ActionTilson

This definitely isn’t the first time that Johnson has been rumored for a DC role. In fact, we’ve been hearing that this is a possibility since 2012 when he was rumored for Lobo, but that one didn’t really go anywhere. I think it’s safe to assume that if the Rock is going to play a hero, it’s going to be one of the more obscure ones. He’s obviously not built to play the Flash or Nightwing or anyone in that realm. The only hero I’d be excited to see him play is Cyborg, but I still think it’s more likely he’ll be a villain.
The question now becomes which villain could he play. There are endless possibilities, so it’s almost useless to speculate this early on, but two stand out to me as characters who Johnson could thrive as. The first is Darkseid. We first heard that foe might be the main antagonist in Justice League last winter, but there hasn’t been much more news since then. Johnson’s involvement could mean those rumors were indeed accurate.
The other pick I have is Solomon Grundy. While he’s not as popular of a character, he’s battled multiple of the Justice League’s heroes, so that would make him an excellent pick for a villain in one of the team-up movies. Johnson is one of the few actors with the physical presence to play Grundy, though it’s likely that a good bit of the character’s look would result from CGI, regardless of who portrays him.
While we’ve heard plenty of rumors before, the fact Johnson himself Tweeted this means it’s likely true. Hopefully there will be some official news as to what character he’s playing soon, but until then all we can do is speculate.
