Early MCU Concept Art Shows Infinity War’s Scarlet Witch Replete With Iconic Headband

Check out this alternate design for Wanda Maximoff (Scarlet Witch), which imagines the Infinity War hero replete with her iconic headband.

In their journey from page to screen, it’s fair to say that many of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes underwent a series of creative changes – a redesign here, a creative tweak there – before they were introduced to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

For instance, Captain America’s suit design is more understated when compared to the star-spangled patriot of Marvel Comics. But for Scarlet Witch, Marvel’s adaptation involved removing one item, in particular: that iconic headband.

So, by the time, Wanda Maximoff is introduced during Avengers: Age of Ultron – following up on The Winter Soldier‘s post-credits sting, no less – Elizabeth Olsen’s would-be Avenger left her headgear by the wayside in favor of a more grounded and realistic costume.

But as Marvel veteran Andy Park revealed during an ACE Comic Con presentation (h/t ComicBook.com), there exists some early MCU concept art that shows the Avengers: Infinity War hero with her headband intact.

Not that the actress was all that fussed by Marvel’s decision, mind you. In a previous interview, Olsen recalled the moment when Joss Whedon made it abundantly clear that she will “never ever have to wear what [Wanda] wears in the comics.”

About the same meeting Joss Whedon even mentioned who we were meeting about, he said, ‘There’s this character Scarlet Witch that I’m interested in for you to play,’ and then he said, ‘When you go home and Google her, just know you will never ever have to wear what she wears in the comics.’ Because I did ballet growing up, but that’s not a confident look.

Now that Infinity War has come and gone, and Ant-Man and the Wasp is about to hit theaters (our review), Marvel will likely hold fire on the Avengers 4 marketing campaign until the year’s end. Ditto for the title reveal, which will seemingly come after the first teaser trailer for Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden’s Captain Marvel pic.
