Elizabeth Olsen Says Scarlet Witch Won’t Be Affected By Fox Acquisition

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is set to undergo a massive change if Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox goes through, as it means that the X-Men will be folded into the shared universe featuring the Avengers, the Guardians, Spider-Man and many more. One character who could theoretically get a reboot if this happened, then, is Scarlet Witch.

Traditionally, Wanda Maximoff is a mutant in the comics but the MCU reimagined her powers as the result of experiments with the Mind Stone, as any reference to mutants was forbidden at the time. If the X-Men become part of continuity in a few years, though, Scarlet Witch’s true origins could be explored on screen.

But does actress Elizabeth Olsen think this is a possibility? The Avengers: Infinity War star was asked about the idea on Everything Iconic With Danny Pellegrino. Unfortunately for Marvel comics fans who might be interested in this playing out on screen, Olsen doesn’t see it ever happening, as it would mess with what’s been established with her character too much.

“I don’t think so because we’ve gone so far to create a non X-Men universe backstory for my character. And now it’s the reason I’m connected to Vision, because the stone in his head is the stone that gave me my powers. So we really leap into the stones.”

That said, if an Avengers/X-Men crossover is genuinely on the cards, Olsen would love to work with Magneto himself, Michael Fassbender – who would be her on-screen dad if the Marvel comics continuity’s followed.

“So I don’t think so, however, if there were a Michael Fassbender being my daddy crossover I would say, ‘Yes please.’ I would love to work with Fassbender.”

It’s funny that Scarlet Witch becoming a mutant in the MCU is now on the cards, as the movies’ alterations to the character actually caused some changes to the comics. Back in 2015, it was revealed that Wanda and her brother Quicksilver actually weren’t mutants, after all, and that they got their powers from the High Evolutionary.

Regardless of what happens in the future, Scarlet Witch has a lot of drama ahead of her in Avengers: Infinity War, which arrives in cinemas on April 27th.
