If you’ve picked up the latest issue of Empire Magazine – or been living anywhere but under a rock for the past week – you’ll know that it’s dedicated to Avengers: Infinity War, which looks set to become the crowning achievement for Marvel Studios and, quite frankly, the biggest movie of all-time.

With 10 years of superhero legacy at its disposal and more characters than you could shake an Infinity Gauntlet at, it’s fair to say that, on paper, Infinity War has all the makings of a special, once-in-a-generation kind of film. Between them, directors Joe and Anthony Russo – not to mention their screenwriters and frequent collaborators Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus – have executed an impossible juggling act with some of the biggest names in comic book history. And don’t even get us started on the currently untitled Avengers 4.

Of course, the jury’s still out on whether the Russo Brothers will be able to stick the landing, but with fans gobbling up advance ticket sales like they’re going out of fashion, it would take something truly extraordinary for Avengers: Infinity War to fall flat later this month.

Speaking of which, with the theatrical release fast approaching, Marvel’s now debuted Empire’s stills in HD and without the magazine’s text, giving us another glimpse at a film which has since been described as Thanos’ origin story. Wait, what?

Yes, when creating a backstory for Josh Brolin’s Mad Titan, McFeely and Markus made a conscious effort to write a villain who’s at once empathetic and horrifying, and we imagine those long-rumored flashback scenes from Infinity War‘s second trailer will help display a softer side to the purple-skinned giant.

Six Infinity Stones. 22 costumed crusaders. One Mad Titan. It can only be Avengers: Infinity War, which is expected to bring Earth’s Mightiest Heroes together for the fight of their life on April 27th.
