It’s a sad, sad day for Marvel fans. Remember how we were all speculating a while back about the Marvel Cinematic Universe merging with other franchises? Well, Spider-Man may still join the MCU in the near future but I’m afraid the same cannot be said about the X-Men. Evan Peters (American Horror Story) has been recently cast as Quicksilver in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Days of Future Past. Yes, that’s the same Quicksilver that is (or was?) supposed to be in The Avengers 2. Unless Peters is allowed to reprise his role in the latter, the chances of merging both universes are quite slim.
What a mess. How could they let this happen? Well, as it turns out, Bryan Singer outfoxed Avengers 2 director Joss Whedon and Marvel Studios executive Kevin Feige simply by being open about his intentions with Quicksilver, instead of playing the “I will neither confirm nor deny” game. Here’s what Singer tweeted:

Well, what’s Marvel Studios’ next move? There are several scenarios to be taken into account. Whedon could decide to replace Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver (or maybe just the latter) with other characters without altering the story a whole lot, or he might just go ahead and cast another actor in the role. Either way, things are not looking up for the brother-sister duo in the MCU.
Quite frankly, I’m guessing they’re toast. Joss Whedon was originally adamant about including the Wasp in The Avengers — and how did that turn out? Right, she’s nowhere to be seen in the film. While I’m not aware of how badly Whedon wanted to explore these characters in The Avengers 2 or how instrumental they were to the overall plot, there’s a still plethora of Marvel characters to choose from. If they still need a duo, why not feature Daredevil and Elektra? The rights for the Man without Fear recently reverted back to Marvel, they might as well make good use of him.
