Every current ‘Lord of the Rings’ movie and TV show in the works

There's still plenty more Middle-earth stories to be told.

Fans of Tolkien can rejoice at the prospect of returning once more to Middle-earth after the announcement from Warner Bros. was made today confirming we would be getting more adaptations of The Lord of the Rings. Not only that but we have more of The Rings of Power on the way and there’s even more Tolkien content on the way so we thought we’d take a more in-depth look at the upcoming TV shows and movies that are currently in the works.

While there have been very few details surrounding the upcoming Warner Bros. films, it does seem that Peter Jackson has been consulted, although it’s uncertain whether he will be involved in some capacity. That could suggest that the films may well be set in the same world as the original trilogy and The Hobbit films.

There are plenty more stories from Tolkien’s novels that could be adapted into films. The Silmarillion could be a good place to start, although the mythology of Middle-earth is expansive and there are many stories and tales that could be expanded upon in their own right. Maybe we could finally see Tom Bombadil in a live-action role. Either way, the Warner Bros. announcement sounds like it will remain faithful to the source material while exploring new parts of the world. Currently, there’s no telling when these films will be released or whether they will come in the form of another trilogy or not.

After the twist at the end of the first season, the show is poised to make an exciting comeback. While there is no specific date for when the show will return, it’s expected to be sometime mid-2024. It’s one of the most expensive shows Amazon has ever produced so it’s great to see that they are taking their time with it.

The show didn’t get off on the best foot with die hard Tolkien fans as the showrunners made many changes to the original source material. However, it managed to win over many of the naysayers with its intriguing story and well-written characters. We expect the show will continue to show us Sauron’s rise to power and the heroes’ attempts to thwart him in season 2. We will hopefully get to see more of Tolkien’s world, but we’ll also likely see some changes to the source material again.

Another film developed by New Line Cinema and Warner Bros., this film is going to be an anime and it will be directed by Kenji Kamiyama. It’s quite a departure from the usual visual style that we’ve come to expect from adaptations of Tolkien’s work but we’re excited to see it nonetheless.

The film will take place 183 years before The Lord of the Rings trilogy and will tell the story of Helm Hammerhand — the legendary king of Rohan — as he fights against Dunlending lord Wulf. Fans will get to see settings from the original trilogy such as Helms Deep, where a lot of the plot will take place. The film is set to hit theaters April 12, 2024.

While that’s all of the upcoming Lord of the Rings adaptations we know of for now, it seems like we just can’t get away from Middle-earth. Tolkien’s fantasy world is so large that we’re sure we’ll be seeing many more movies and TV shows in the future.
