WGTC: Getting back to Curse Of Chucky a bit, was this movie ever viewed as a stand alone film at any point? Did you always know it would tie the entire Child’s Play universe together?
Don Mancini: Oh yeah. Really, its roots were that originally we were going to attempt a remake of the first movie, because for a while that was what was in vogue in horror in Hollywood. All these classic franchises from the 70s and 80s…
Brad Dourif: I did Myers. I did Rob Zombie’s two Halloween movies…
Don Mancini: Even when it was going to be a strict remake, I didn’t want it to be a strict remake. I didn’t want to tell the same story again. I feel like that’s part of the problem with remakes, and I’m not even talking in the horror genre. Even the new Spider-Man movie with Andrew Garfield, it was like, “Didn’t we just see this movie with Tobey Maguire?” Then, we couldn’t do the remake because of rights issues, because the original was at MGM and the rest were Universal, so I think we actually got the best of all possible worlds with what we ended up with.
Curse Of Chucky is a movie that’s technically a sequel that doesn’t ignore any of the mythology that’s built up over the course of 25 years, but tonally returns to the feeling of the original film. I think that because it’s the 25th anniversary of the franchise, it seemed like a nice time to do that. I wanted it to be a love letter to the fans. They’ve been asking for it to be scary again, so getting in a long winded way back to the answer of your question, it’s yes, I always wanted to build in this nostalgia factor to the movie.
WGTC: So you brought Alex back, you brought Tiff back – where are Glen/Glenda? I mean who’s watching them, who’s babysitting?
Don Mancini: Well it’s not Fulvia, because she got killed – how old would they be? They’d be in high school now, and I bet Glen is bringing his boyfriend to the Senior prom, and Glenda is poisoning the punch. [Laughs]
WGTC: So Alex, you’ve been a little quiet over there – how was it to get the call from Don after all these years and come back for another Chucky movie?
Alex Vincent: It was so exciting. Don and I have been talking friendly for a few years, mostly about music and movies and other stuff, I had sent him some things I had written, and it was great to discuss stuff about that. He always knew I’d be interested in coming back if the time was right. I love the fact that it’s a horror film again, and I’m happy I came back at that time. It really did give that opportunity to tie the loose ends. I was thrilled to get the phone call and he was thrilled to call me. Don had the idea for a while, and wasn’t allowed to talk to me about it, the same way I wasn’t allowed to talk about it for years after the fact.
Brad Dourif: I knew. [Laughs] Not only that, I saw you, and I knew that!
Alex Vincent: [Don] told me in the phone call! He said, “No one knows about this. OK, Brad might know something about this…”
Don Mancini: Brad knew because he read the script. He just kept going, “Oh, [Alex] is going to love this.”
Alex Vincent: I said to Don like three or four times that Brad didn’t mention it, at all, so when he was finally able to make the call that he could mention it, I guess I heard a little something in his voice when I picked up the phone.
Danielle Bisutti: Awwww!
