Excitement for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has been building for months, years really, and now that the release of the film is mere days away, many frenzied fans can hardly handle the anticipation. On the night of December 13 lines will be growing long before the midnight hour, full of fans anxious to finally see Peter Jackson‘s fourth journey into Middle Earth. As if anyone needs another reason to see The Hobbit in IMAX opening night, Super Hero Hype reports that a set of 4 character posters will be given out exclusively to those who venture to the midnight showing.

The posters feature Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman), Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) and Gollum (Andy Serkis.) They look extremely similar to the sketches that ran during the credits of Return Of The King, successfully following the mythic element of the tale.

The posters are all wonderful works of art. The characters are set against a sand-colored background, with faint writing on three, and a map of the journey behind Bilbo. Gollum is peering deviously off the edge of the frame, while the other three stare menacingly forward as they display their swords. Any of the four would be an excellent addition to a Tolkien fan’s collection.

That being said, it’s unlikely that many fans will go to the midnight showing because of these posters. They’re probably better thought of as a extra souvenir for the fans who already have their tickets. Seeing the beautiful landscapes that have characterized the franchise in IMAX format are more than enough of a reward for attending a midnight showing.

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey hits theaters on December 14, 2012. For a list of the theaters participating in the poster promotion click here.
