Having earned north of half a billion dollars at the box office across its five installments so far, fans have been waiting on tenterhooks for The Purge 6 to gain some serious traction.
Creator James DeMonaco has confirmed several times over that he’s written the script, while Frank Grillo is more than happy to return as Leo Barnes. And yet, it’s been a long time since the next chapter in the dystopian saga was revealed to be in the works, leaving Purgers growing increasingly frustrated.
Unfortunately, DeMonaco did offer an update in an interview with We Got This Covered, but it may not be the one anybody wants to hear.
“I don’t know, being completely honest. I think they like the script over there. I love the script. I think it’s oddly the most fun of the scripts, which is the strangest thing, and it’s the most political and the most fun at the same time. Because I bring back the Frank Grillo character from Purge 2 and 3, and I think people really loved him, and I love working with Frank.
So I was pretty excited. I think the budget is a concern. It’s quite a large budget I wrote on 6, and I think that might be causing somewhat of a delay. I think all the studios are starting to weigh budgets as we move forward. And as we both know, the box office isn’t fully back here in America. And I think it’s really making everyone question each and every film that’s being green lit. So, to be quite honest, I don’t know. I don’t know where we’re at.”
Based on nothing but the box office bonanza The Purge has brought in for Universal so far, we’re inclined to think another one is going to happen eventually. Let’s hope that it does, because a reunion between DeMonaco and Grillo would be music to the ears of the fandom.
