Brenton Thwaites is an actor who’s about to explode in Hollywood. With roles in Oculus, Maleficent and The Giver, he is certain to become one of the breakthrough stars of 2014. However, one of the best movies that he’s done this year is The Signal, a science fiction thriller in which he plays MIT freshman Nick Eastman.

As the film starts, Nick is on a road trip with his best friend Jonah (Beau Knapp) and his girlfriend Hailey Peterson (Olivia Cooke), during which he and Jonah practice their love of hacking. During their travels, they come into contact with a rival hacker named Nomad, who lures them to the middle of the desert. Once there they are rendered unconscious, and when they wake up they discover that they are part of a sinister plot that is far bigger than any of them could have ever imagined.

Recently, we sat down with Brenton for an exclusive interview while he was in Los Angeles doing press for The Signal. Among other things, he discussed how he got involved with the movie, what it was like working with Laurence Fishburne, shooting on such a tight schedule, and more.

Check it out in the video below and be sure to catch The Signal as it’s now playing in theatres!
