Last Friday, the first teaser for Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker finally dropped, giving the fans two minutes of footage to scrutinize for all it’s worth. And while that’s not a lot of content to look at, you best be happy with what you’ve got, since it could be several more months before the film’s full trailer arrives.

Much to the frustration of some, the schedule for The Rise of Skywalker’s biggest reveals has been a little different from that of the previous two installments. For example, while the title of The Last Jedi was announced in January on the year of release, the equivalent unveiling for Episode IX didn’t come until last week, when it was revealed at the same time as the teaser.

With that in mind, the marketing for the last two episodes may not always be the most reliable indicator for the promotion of The Rise of Skywalker. Then again, the upcoming flick has kept with the pattern of releasing the first teaser during Star Wars Celebration, so perhaps there’s still value in looking to the previous entries to work out when the next trailer might come out.

If so, then we’re probably looking at an October drop date, since this was when the first full trailers for The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi were both revealed. That potentially leaves us with about six months to speculate on the latest footage, giving the fans time to concoct all kinds of eccentric theories about the Emperor’s return and the film’s ambiguous title.

But regardless of what the coming months bring, we still have over two thirds of the year to wait before Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters on December 20th.
