After the success of 2020’s Extraction, a highly anticipated sequel is slated for release later this year. Extraction 2 will explore what happens after Chris Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake – a former Australian Army Special Air Service Regiment operator who now works as a mercenary for hire – successfully saves the kidnapped son of a drug lord, seemingly at the cost of his life.
The film is based on the graphic novel Ciudad, written by Ande Parks, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Fernando León González, and Eric Skillman. The adaptation became one of Netflix’s most-watched premieres ever, with over 90 million households tuning in to watch Hemsworth tackle the traditional action hero role.
With such a successful turnout, it’s no surprise Netflix has green-lit a sequel, and with Hemsworth in the lead role (despite his apparently fatal injury in the first film). Extraction has serious potential to become a new action franchise. As Extraction 2‘s release date gets closer, here’s all we know about the sequel so far.
When is Extraction 2 coming out, and what’s it about?
After releasing a teaser trailer (and one cryptic trailer that didn’t perform as Netflix hoped), Netflix dropped a longer trailer on May 16, a month before the film’s official release date June 16. It’s revealed that Rake was near death after the events of the first film and now, he must discover why he fought so hard for a second chance at life.
The trailer promises a ton of action, even showing a scene where Rake catches on fire while breaking a woman out of prison and continues to fight his assailants. Director Sam Hargrave revealed Hemsworth was legitimately set on fire while shooting the scene, an action-packed 12 minutes shot all in one take — a fact the filmmakers are evidently very proud of, as they’re basing the majority of the film’s marketing around this one scene.
While the first film’s script was written by Andre Parks and the Russo brothers (yes, the ones behind some of the best MCU films), Extraction 2 is written by Joe Russo alone. Little is known about the film’s plot despite how close the release is; Netflix has shared that Rake returns from his near-death experience tasked with a new mission to save the imprisoned family of a Georgian criminal. Production began in Prague, Czech Republic in Nov. 2021 and additional scenes were shot in Vienna, Austria, with the film finishing production in Nov. 2022.
Who stars in Extraction 2, and is an Extraction 3 already in the works?
Despite appearing fatally injured at the end of the first film, Chris Hemsworth is returning to reprise his role as protagonist Tyler Rake. Additionally, Golshifteh Farahani will be returning as Nik Khan, a mercenary and Rake’s handler, as will Adam Bessa as Yaz Khan, a member of Nik’s team. Farahani is an Iranian and French actress, best known for her roles in M for Mother and Body of Lies and Bessa is a French and Tunisian actor known for his roles in The Blessed and the Prime Video series Hanna.
The film will also feature some new faces, including Olga Kurylenko, Daniel Bernhadt, and Tinatin Dalakshivili joining the cast. James Bond fans will recognize Kurlyenko as Camille Montes from Quantum of Solace, while action junkies might recognize Bernhadt as Agent Johnson in The Matrix Reloaded and Kirill in John Wick. Dalakshivili is a relative newcomer to the acting scene, who first started her career as a model and landscape designer in her native Georgia before starring in the sci-fi film Abigail.
The confirmed cast members in Extraction 2 are:
- Chris Hemsworth as Tyler Rack
- Olga Kurylenko as Mia
- Golshifteh Farahani as Nik Khan
- Daniel Bernhadt as Konstantine
- Tinatin Dalakshivili as Ketevan

Although Extraction 2 hasn’t been released yet, both Hemsworth and Russo seem hopeful for a third installment. In an interview, Russo said, “I mean, you never want to anticipate the audience’s response, but there’s certainly room for an Extraction 3.” Hemsworth echoed his sentiments while speaking with Total Film magazine (as per Collider), saying, “I love having something else outside of Marvel that’s amassed a bit of a following, something more in the real world. I honestly feel like we made a better film than the first one. That’s rare in the franchise world. We’d be remiss not to have a crack at another one.”
Extraction 2 premieres on Netflix June 16, 2023.
