‘Fantastic Four’ star Ebon Moss-Bachrach revealed what he’d do he if had superpowers, and MAGA is furious

Jack Kirby would be proud.

The Fantastic Four: First Steps is officially a hit, and Marvel Studios will be breathing a big sigh of relief. Both Captain America: Brave New World and Thunderbolts* underperformed at the box office, raising the perennial fear that the once-mighty MCU has lost its spark.

But, largely by setting First Steps in an alternate universe not ensnared in years of continuity, it’s a real breath of fresh air. Another huge part of that is the perfect casting, with Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach easily the best live-action rendition of Marvel’s first family to date.

But even though Moss-Bachrach is now the official ever-lovin’ Thing for a generation, he’s certainly not holding back in interviews. He was recently asked a relatively softball question: what he would do if he had The Thing’s powers. He delivered a hardball answer: “There’s a handful of fascists that I would just throw into outer space”:

MAGA assumes he means them

In a telling move, MAGA immediately assumed the “fascists” he was referring to must mean themselves. I mean, c’mon guys, if you don’t want to be called fascists, maybe don’t immediately conclude people are talking about you when they mention them!

Replies sniffily say “We all know who he’s referring to as fascists”, that this is “indicative of how violent the left is”, and that killing fascists is “woke”. It should also be noted that many of the angry responses quickly point out that Moss-Bachrach is Jewish, which… well, not doing a great job of refuting the fascist allegations there.

Ben Grimm’s creator, comics legend Jack Kirby, would highly approve of Moss-Bachrach’s comments. Kirby was a proud and active anti-fascist for his entire career. He threatened to fight American Nazis upset at Captain America punching Hitler, signed up for a combat role in World War II, and personally killed Nazis while in combat.

Kirby’s friend Stan Sakai recounted that Kirby “always told his war stories. They were different stories, but it always ended with him killing four Nazis. He hated Nazis”. Well, so he should, and so should we all. Seems to me like blasting a few fascists into outer space is just about the most Ben Grimm answer possible.
