Why does this DC character scream "Hasbro?"

Blue Beetle‘s latest teaser showcased more of this upcoming DC superhero movie. But for some odd reason, this preview had people thinking of another popular franchise. And looking at the character again, it’s understandable why that was the case.

The recent teaser, which was shared on Becky G’s Instagram story, teased the appearance of Carapax the Indestructible Man. According to The Direct, this character will be played by American-Canadian actor Raoul Trujillo and his appearance in the film is the complete opposite of the Blue Beetle.

However, the people on r/DC_Cinematic instantly had the Transformers movie franchise in their heads after seeing this Blue Beetle villain. Fans jokingly suggested this new DC nemesis felt out of place and looked like someone that belonged in the Transformers franchise, which is kind of odd considering that Carapax looks like a robot in the comics. Regardless, fans saw Carapax look more like Starscream rather than a DC villain.

While most people shouted Starscream in the comments, others argued that Carapax’s appearance may look reminiscent of the Big Bad BeetleBorgs, a superhero series made by the same guy who created the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. Looking back at the character, I don’t think it has any resemblance to the late ’90s TV series, but to each to their own I guess.

This isn’t the first time the Blue Beetle film had people thinking of different franchises after seeing the previews. When the first trailer first came out back in April, fans thought the Buster Sword from the Final Fantasy series was the weapon of choice during the final scene. Considering how the scarab can create anything its hosts desire, viewers might expect some odd nods to pop culture, even if it’s unintentional.

Blue Beetle is scheduled to hit theaters on Aug. 18, 2023.
