The French language newspaper Liberation has the first official look at James Gray‘s new film Low Life. Other than some set photos, these scanned image are the first real look at the film, which Gray hopes to take to the Venice and/or Toronto Film Festivals later this year.

Though the image quality isn’t great, you can absolutely feel the fantastic 1920’s New York atmosphere screaming through the wonderful images. We also get a look at our three leads in the film, Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner.

For those unfamiliar with the plot, Low Life follows “the journey of a Polish immigrant (Cotillard) who becomes caught between a cabaret owner/pimp (Phoenix) and a magician who wants to save her (Renner).”

Gray is an excellent director and in my opinion, he’s vastly underrated. With a fantastic cast and interesting story backing Low Life, the film is right up there on my most anticipated list.

Low Life stars Marion Cotillard, Joaquin Phoenix and Jeremy Renner and will be released later this year.
