From what we can tell, mother! is set to be another intense outing for the director, one that largely centers on a young couple who find their relationship tested when an uninvited guest comes knocking. Part home invasion, part horror, it has all the makings of a must-see, and below you’ll be able to find a rundown of what to expect.

A couple’s relationship is tested when uninvited guests arrive at their home, disrupting their tranquil existence. From filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, mother! stars Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Ed Harris and Michelle Pfeiffer in this riveting psychological thriller about love, devotion and sacrifice.

Sounds interesting, right? And at least based on this first trailer, it appears as if the film will be quite unsettling and disturbing, with more than enough nightmarish imagery and truly dark moments to satisfy even the most jaded horror fans. It’s still too early to say for sure, but it certainly looks like Aronofsky’s got another hit on his hands here and we’re very excited to see the full thing.

Even if it doesn’t manage to live up to his previous work, which may be tough to do, the director is always fascinating to watch and to see him dive further into the horror genre is very exciting, as he’s proven in the past that he can craft compelling viewing experiences when dealing with dark material.

Having retreated from the crowded Halloween corridor, Darren Aronofsky’s mother! will now open opposite the likes of American Assassin and All I See Is You on September 15th. It’s understood Paramount is making a big festival push for Aronofsky’s latest as well, with plans for screenings at both Venice and the Toronto International Film Festival.
