2018 has already proven to be the biggest year ever seen for superhero cinema, with titles like Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and Deadpool 2 coming out to critical acclaim and huge commercial success. In this context, there’s a boldness to the statement that this Phil Lord and Rodney Rothman-penned feature might be the genre’s best all year, and while it’s still a few weeks before most of us can decide for ourselves, the vibrant animation witnessed in the trailers has already rendered this flick a surefire winner in the eyes of some viewers.

The quirky assortment of Spider-People probably hasn’t hurt either when it comes to getting on fans’ good sides. As well as bringing us Miles and an older version of Peter Parker, Spider-Verse boasts Hailee Steinfeld in the role of Spider-Gwen, Nicolas Cage as Spider-Noir, Kimiko Glenn as SP//dr, and John Mulaney as Spider-Ham. We’ll see how these many worlds collide, and if the results are as good as people say they are, when Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse swings into theaters on December 14th.
