First Teasers For Gerard Butler’s Geostorm Tee Up A Global Catastrophe

Gerard Butler goes up against Mother Nature in the first, foreboding teasers for Geostorm, Skydance's long-delayed disaster pic.

Wonder Woman isn’t the only 2017 tentpole on the verge of unleashing a new trailer – Geostorm, the long-delayed disaster pic headed up by Gerard Butler, is currently in the process of drumming up excitement ahead of tomorrow’s big reveal.

Embedded below, you’ll find a barrage of blink-and-you’ll-miss them teasers designed to show the international scope of Skydance’s thriller – and make no mistake, this is cinematic destruction on a big, big scale. From a tidal wave inexplicably crashing into Dubai to a pool of lava spewing from Earth’s fractured crust, Geostorm looks set to take the concept of disaster porn and push it to a level not seen since Roland Emmrich’s 2012. Thankfully, the story doesn’t revolve around a bunch of neutrinos mutating; instead, Geostorm sees action veteran Gerard Butler go up against Mother Nature as he fights to “prevent climate-controlling satellites from creating a storm of epic proportions, his brother discovers a plot to assassinate the president.”

It’s the premise of Olympus Has Fallen on steroids, essentially, and Skydance has brought Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish, Ed Harris and Andy Garcia along for the ride. And though Roland Emmerich’s hallmarks for spectacle can be glimpsed throughout the teasers below, it’s actually Independence Day cohort Dean Devlin who is in the director’s chair for Geostorm – at least, that was until Skydance ordered expensive and indeed “significant changes” to the film, when Gotham‘s Danny Cannon was drafted in to oversee the reshoots. Can the studio’s long-gestating disaster pic pull a Rogue One and overcome the odds this October? We’ll find out in due time, but remember to check back with WGTC tomorrow, March 8th, for the full trailer reveal.

Geostorm descends into theaters on October 20th, at which point Skydance’s effects-laden blockbuster will be going up against the likes of The Mountain Between Us and Insidious: Chapter 4 for box office supremacy.
