With a cast that already boasts Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Woody Harrelson and Emilia Clarke, things are looking pretty bright for Disney’s upcoming Han Solo spinoff. It seems that it’s about to get even brighter though, as the film has now picked up Fleabag star Phoebe Waller-Bridge, who broke out in a big way last year with the Amazon TV show.
Variety are the ones with the scoop, and while the actress’ role is being kept tightly under wraps, they’ve been told that it will be a “CGI-driven performance” that’s a “significant part of the ensemble, similarly to key Star Wars characters in the past like Chewbacca, C-3P0 and most recently, Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO in Rogue One.” Putting two and two together, this means that she’s either playing an alien of some sort, or a droid. Our bet’s on the latter.
With production now underway on the spinoff, and the film on course for a holiday 2018 release, it would seem that Waller-Bridge is likely the last major cast member to board. Then again, given that we still know so little about what Disney’s got planned here, we can’t say with certainty that no other actors or actresses will join. If this is it though, it’s definitely a stacked cast and one that we’re beyond excited to see in action.
As for Waller-Bridge, not being terribly familiar with her work, I can’t speak too much to her involvement here, but she earned fantastic reviews for Fleabag and she’s certainly on the up and up. As such, joining a project like this can only be a good thing for her career and I’m looking forward to seeing how she ends up factoring into things.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Han Solo anthology movie is without an official title at the moment, but it will have a “heist or Western type feel,” according to Lucasfilm head honcho Kathleen Kennedy. Once we hear more, we’ll be sure to let you know!
