A couple weeks back, MacGruber director Jorma Taccone led fans of the 2010 comedy to believe the former SNL character would be coming back for a sequel despite making fewer than $10 million worldwide. Well, star Will Forte told Ain’t It Cool News otherwise.

Out doing press for the upcoming Adam Sandler and Andy Samberg-led comedy That’s My Boy, Forte addressed the comment made by Taccone that MacGruber would return and his exploits would take place during Christmas in an ode to Die Hard.

“As for MacGruber 2, it’s very much in the works. We’re just… no, I’m kidding. Jorma mentioned it. He was really tired one morning giving an interview, and he said something stupid about it. Believe me, we would love… we had so much fun doing that. We’re proud of it, and we jokingly talk about the sequel all the time. But I don’t think anybody in their right mind would give us any money for it. If somebody gives us money for it.”

Sounds like Taccone simply didn’t make it clear enough that ideas and discussions with Forte and co-writer John Solomon were more or less guys just talking “what if?” There’s also the possibility that Taccone was trying to see if he could drum up enough Internet buzz about the sequel to get Universal to take them seriously despite the financial shortcomings of the original.

Either way, it looks like there’s no studio interest to make a MacGruber 2, though the interview does continue with Samberg saying he’d give Forte $1,000 to make the film.
