The duo behind Fruitvale Station, director Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan, have both experienced a bit of a rise in fame lately due to their latest effort. Finding much critical success and doing very well in its current theatrical run, Fruitvale Station is opening up more opportunities for the two young filmmakers. Today, we’re hearing that the duo are in talks for a film over at MGM called Creed, which will be a spin-off from the Rocky series.

Though we don’t know too much about the project right now, what we’re hearing is that it will focus on Apollo Creed’s grandson as he “follows his natural instinct and talent to get into the boxing ring with champ Rocky Balboa as his mentor.” And yes, Sylvester Stallone will reprise his role as Rocky in the film.

Coogler hopes to tie the story into what we’ve already seen in previous Rocky films but again, details are scarce and all we really know right now is that the duo are in talks to make the film with MGM.

The project sounds interesting but one has to wonder, is there still an audience for another Rocky film? Granted, this is a spin-off but no doubt they’re aiming for fans of the original series. The last film to come from Stallone’s famed franchise, simply titled Rocky Balboa, was mediocre at best. I’m just not sure if anyone really cares to see a spin-off film at this point.

Don’t get me wrong, Coogler and Jordan are both exciting young talents and I’m eager to see what they do next, but is this really the direction that they want to head in?

What do you think? Will anyone care to see Creed? Even if Stallone is back will there be enough of an audience for this film? Let us know in the comments below.
