Director Garry Marshall has expressed his desire to jump-start a Princess Diaries 3 – but not without ensuring Anne Hathaway is fully on board.
One thing that will at the very least push those plans is Hathaway’s pregnancy. As Marshall tells People, the wheels won’t be set in motion until the actress is back on her feet, though judging by the director’s comments, returning to reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis – her breakout role, no less – is high on Hathaway’s calling card.
“I was with Anne Hathaway a couple weeks ago, it looks like we want to do ‘Princess Diaries 3’ in Manhattan,” Marshall told People. “Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it.”
First released under Disney in 2001 followed by a sequel in 2004, Hathaway played the role of a wide-eyed teenager who stumbles onto a dream come true after discovering that she is, in fact, heir to the fictional Kingdom of Genovia. Julie Andrews also starred as Queen Dowager Clarisse Renaldi, grandmother to Mia.
Anne Hathaway can next be seen opposite Mia Wasikowska and Helena Bonham Carter in Alice Through the Looking Glass, while there’s also Nacho Vigalondo’s Spanish flick Colossal on the horizon for her.
Princess Diaries 3, meanwhile, is still rooted to the drawing board at this early stage. But once Hathaway returns to the fray, would you like to see her don the tiara as Mia Thermopolis once more?
