Sony has assured audiences that despite The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo‘s slightly disappointing box office numbers, they do indeed plan to continue with the trilogy by making The Girl Who Played With Fire. However, Entertainment Weekly reports that the late 2013 release goal will not happen, meaning the earliest we’ll see the sequel will be 2014.
A source close to production told EW that Dragon Tattoo scribe Steven Zaillian is still working on the script, and nothing will move forward until the screenplay is complete.
Both Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara are locked in for the sequel, but director David Fincher’s involvement has yet to be confirmed. If there is any hope of an early 2014 release, Fincher will have to make a decision relatively soon.
Personally, I loved The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. It was definitely one of my favorite films of 2011, and one of the few films where I’ve loved the book and not had any major complaints with the adaptation to the screen. Mara was absolutely phenomenal as Lisbeth Salander, turning in one of the best performances of the last few years. I think Fincher did a great job, and I’ll be pretty disappointed if he isn’t at the helm of The Girl Who Played With Fire.
