The Goonies 2 Was Apparently Pitched But Never Got Produced

The influence that The Goonies has had on entertainment cannot be understated. It helped cement the legacies of Richard Donner, Steven Spielberg and Chris Columbus, and the creative storytelling and quirky cast inspired countless future projects, such as Stranger Things. The main characters even appeared as a LEGO set, as well as getting a shoutout from Deadpool decades later. Given the widespread impact that this movie has had since its release, it's somewhat shocking that fans have never been gifted with The Goonies 2.

The long-rumored sequel has never come to fruition despite all of the clamoring for it. At this point, it seems like viewers will never get another installment of the classic and if anything, a reboot seems more likely than anything else. While it’s certainly better than nothing, it still isn’t as gratifying as a sequel would be.

Corey Feldman clearly agrees with this point, as he’s long been advocating for The Goonies 2. In fact, he recently revealed that he and his fellow co-star once pitched an idea to those at the top. According to him, they loved it. Unfortunately, the project never saw the light of day due to expenses.

Here’s his full quote on the matter:

“Sean Astin and I actually wrote a pitch, a treatment of about 10 pages that we took into [director] Richard Donner and a representative of [screenwriter] Chris Columbus and Steven [Spielberg]. We pitched it and Donner loved it, but he said it was too expensive an idea.”

This might’ve actually been for the best. The original Goonies concluded so perfectly that it’s hard to imagine what a follow-up would even look like. While there are plenty of sequels that can flawlessly continue where the first installment left off, there are definitely many more that fail to capture the magic of their predecessor. It would’ve been interesting to see which category The Goonies 2 would’ve fallen under, but it sounds like we’ll never know.
