Ever since a new Green Lantern film was announced, fans have been wildly debating whether or not it would focus on Hal Jordan (who was played by Ryan Reynolds in the derided 2011 film) or John Stewart. But what if the answer is both?

That’s the latest rumor to make the rounds, as put forth by Collider. According to their sources, the upcoming reboot (which doesn’t hit theaters until 2020) may focus on more than one human member of the Green Lantern Corps. In fact, though Jordan and Stewart are the most well-known, fan-favorite character Guy Gardner could appear as well. Then, as the franchise goes forward, it would continue to utilize the multiple-hero approach, shifting its focus from solo stories to the Green Lantern Corps. itself.

Personally, I think that that’s the best way to go, for a number of reasons. For starters, it shakes up the tried-and-true origin story that threatens to oversaturate the superhero cinematic landscape and opens the door for more diverse characters to enter the franchise going forward. It also allows flagship characters like Hal Jordan and John Stewart to take center stage as necessary (in the two upcoming Justice League films, perhaps), but allow second-tier heroes like Gardner (and even Simon Baz or Kyle Rayner down the line) a turn in the spotlight.

Of course, with the Green Lantern reboot still five years away, anything could change. We do have those two Justice League films arriving before then, however, so it’s not ridiculous to think that we could be getting official casting news – for any or all of the Green Lanterns – in the near future. This year’s San Diego Comic-Con, perhaps?

Tell us, would you like to see multiple Lanterns team up when the Green Lantern reboot hits theaters on June 19th, 2020? Sound off in the comments below.
