Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has yet to be unveiled, but one movie we definitely know’s coming is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which was announced pretty much immediately after the first sequel arrived last May.

As the adventures of Star-Lord’s gang of cosmic misfits has proven to be one of the MCU’s most successful sub-franchises, fans are obviously eager to find out what the threequel holds in store. All that writer/director James Gunn is promising for now, though, is that it’ll be “different” from the two movies that proceeded it

In one of his semi-regular live Q&As on Facebook, Gunn was inevitably asked what Vol. 3 will bring us. And while he wouldn’t be drawn on details, he did stress how very different it would be.

“It’s very, very, very different. Very different, but I won’t say how! You’ll have to wait to see the movie, it’s a long time away.”

It’s unclear which aspect of the movie Gunn is referring to in particular here, but we know that the Guardians themselves will likely have changed a fair bit once Vol. 3 comes along. The team will join forces with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in Avengers: Infinity War and its sequel and, while they are old hats at saving the universe, the experience could still affect them in some major ways.

Likewise, Gunn may also be referring to the musical element of the movie, as the soundtrack of classic tunes proved to be such an intrinsic part of the previous films. If you recall, at the end of Vol. 2, Peter got his hands on a Zune which, while it’s old fashioned to those of us on Earth, will give Quill a couple of decades’ worth of new songs to play.

What we do know for sure is that Vol. 3 will provide a much bigger role to Sylvester Stallone’s Stakar and his team of Ravager captains who were introduced in a mid-credits scene in the sequel. Another post-credits teaser also hinted at the arrival of Adam Warlock, but Gunn’s subsequently cooled talk that the character would appear in the third film.

As the writer/director says, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won’t hit theaters for a long while yet, with it expected to arrive sometime in 2020. Thankfully, the Guardians will be on board for May 4th’s Avengers: Infinity War and after that, we should have a better idea of where they’re headed next.
