Who’s Benicio del Toro playing in Guardians of the Galaxy? That’s the question on everyone’s minds and today, Comic Book Movie has brought us an answer. They’re reporting that the actor will play none other than The Collector, one of the eldest entities in the entire Marvel Universe. You might think the speculation has come to an end, but you’re wrong — this revelation actually raises a lot more questions about James Gunn’s highly anticipated project.
First off, will he appear in The Avengers 2? Yes, Del Toro signed on to appear in several films within the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity. Next you’re probably wondering, wasn’t Lee Pace playing the villain? Well, he still might, as The Collector is so immensely powerful that he shouldn’t be considered a true badide — all the guy does is collect people and interesting artifacts to place them out of danger whenever a powerful threat arises.
See? He doesn’t sound all that terrible. Nevertheless, he’s so immensely powerful and wise that you could see how he could be a major threat to the Universe — eventually he just starts collecting stuff because he can, which causes some friction between himself and The Avengers. I don’t think the MCU’s Avengers are quite ready for that yet — they barely managed to defeat Loki and an army of severely uncoordinated Chitauri, so these events might unfold during Phase 3.
So far, this film has proven to be wildly ambitious. Just take a look at the cast: Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer and Michael Rooker as Yondu have all been confirmed to star in the upcoming flick. Glenn Close, Lee Pace, Ophelia Lovibond, John C. Reilly, Karen Gillan and Lloyd Kaufman were also cast in as-of-yet unspecified roles. There’s still much speculation about who will end up voicing Rocket Raccoon and Groot, but we’ll keep you posted when we hear more.
Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters on August 1st, 2014.
