Before July 2018, James Gunn and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy were practically synonymous. Oh, how times change…
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past little while, allow us to recap. Due to a series of disturbing and offensive tweets from yesteryear, Gunn was fired from the MCU, leaving Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 without a director and the cosmic side of Marvel’s cinematic juggernaut in need of a new shepherd.
As things stand, that search is still very much ongoing, with sources saying that Disney is in no rush to replace Gunn at the helm of Guardians 3. Be that as it may, the film remains a priority for the studio, and from what we understand, they still have every intention of making it.
Or at least, that’s according to Sean Gunn, brother of James and the actor behind both Kraglin and the mocap work for Rocket Raccoon. Speaking in a recent interview, he said that while he doesn’t know what’s happening with the project at the moment, Disney still intends on making the film.
“I don’t really know yet what’s going on with ‘Guardians 3.’ I know that Disney still wants to make the movie. I know that they have every intention of using the script that my brother wrote. Obviously, that was a very unfortunate situation for everybody, most of all him, but I am also somebody who had been preparing to spend half a year making that movie and now that’s up in the air.”
Continuing on, he reiterated that the plan is to move forward with Vol. 3, with Marvel contacting him recently to confirm as much.
“Obviously, I think it’s a tricky proposition for them to find another director to step in — and also the scheduling of a lot of other actors who are incredibly busy can’t be easy. But I know that they plan on making the movie. I had not been contacted at all for a while, but I was recently contacted by Marvel saying, ‘Yeah, we do plan to make this movie. We’re just not sure when yet.’ ”
So, while it’s good to hear that everyone involved still hopes to make the threequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is currently on hold until further notice, and while that’s practically unavoidable after losing a director, it seems this extensive delay may have an adverse effect on the story of Avengers 4.
Not to mention it may also result in a few cast members exiting the project. At least, if Dave Bautista’s recent comments are anything to go by.
