Rainn Wilson of The Office fame is the latest big-name star to voice his support for James Gunn, even going so far as to say that he’d work with the “brilliant” director in a heartbeat despite Disney’s decision to remove him from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3.

Wilson was in attendance at Salt Lake City’s FanX convention this past weekend (h/t ComicBook.com), where he spoke a little about The Meg, in which he stars opposite Ruby Rose and Jason Statham, and the ongoing controversy surrounding James Gunn and the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

It’s one in need of a new leader, though Disney is seemingly in no rush to appoint Gunn’s replacement, even if it means delaying Vol. 3 further into 2020. Be that as it may, Wilson is of the belief that James Gunn is still a stand-up guy, despite those insensitive tweets.

Would I work with James Gunn again? Yeah, absolutely I would, yeah. I think James Gunn is a great guy, a brilliant director, a good friend, brilliant mind — one of the most brilliant people working.

Again, supportive messages and online petitions are all well and good, but they’re unlikely to sway Disney’s decision, as the Mouse House is adamant that James Gunn and the Guardians of the Galaxy series have now gone their separate ways. It’s disappointing, of course, as Gunn was instrumental in launching the franchise, while also turning a bunch of C-list characters (to put it kindly) into household names.

Alas, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has been postponed indefinitely, which may well have a knock-on effect on the story of Avengers 4, if Dave Bautista is to be believed.
