The “time must be right” before Adam Warlock is introduced into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Or so says James Gunn, writer and director on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Coming out of Vol. 2 and its delightful post-credits scene, one which Gunn himself fought to keep in the finished cut, many had assumed that Warlock was a shoo-in for the third Guardians movie. But it appears that’s not the case.
Per Twitter, the Marvel mainstay conceded that Adam Warlock was almost left waiting in the wings during Vol. 2, as he wasn’t part of the studio’s plans for either Infinity War or Avengers 4. “We had no plans for him in general,” according to Gunn.
Turns out that’s still very much the case, as the filmmaker recently stressed that Warlock was “never confirmed” for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which is now incubating in the formative stages of development ahead of a potential release in 2020.
And so, while recounting an early scene of the Stakar Ravagers in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, James Gunn touched base on Adam Warlock’s fate, and why the fan-favorite won’t be brought into the Marvel Cinematic Universe until the time is right. Phase 4, perhaps? Or is Gunn merely keeping us on our toes, given Vol. 3 is still so early in development? So many questions, so few answers.

Marvel has so far staked out three release dates in 2020, and we fully expect Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 to slot into one of them. Much the rest of Marvel’s Phase 4, further details on the James Gunn-directed threequel will likely be shared after the release of Avengers 4 in two years’ time, so stay tuned for more.
