‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ sends James Gunn out swinging with the MCU’s first f-bomb

As David Ayer infamously once said: "F*ck Marvel!"

Those unfamiliar with James Gunn‘s work outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be surprised to learn that the Guardians of the Galaxy director has always seemed ill-suited for PG-13 material, which is to be expected given when he got his start at schlock merchants Troma.

Slither, Super, The Suicide Squad, and Peacemaker are a great deal more reflective of his unique approach to blood, guts, and humor than the MCU’s family-friendly cosmic romps, but the one recurring theme throughout his entire filmography is a reliance on humor and heart to drive the story above all else.

Deftly combining all three signatures into one fell swoop, a recently-revealed clip from the upcoming Vol. 3 appears to indicate that the co-CEO of DC Studios is planning to go out swinging, by which we mean dropping the MCU’s first-ever usage of the f-word. Needless to say, fans were excited to see how it ends up playing on the big screen.

While there’s always a chance Marvel will bleep it out, that wouldn’t really make sense within the context of either the film itself or the shared universe, so we’re very curious to see whether or not Star-Lord’s exasperated profanity actually makes it into the final cut when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 comes to theaters in just a couple of weeks.

It would be a cop-out if it didn’t seeing as it’s been teased, but it would also be fitting for Gunn to bid farewell and head off to DC with a f*cking bang.
