Gunpowder Milkshake Director Is Open To Making A Sequel

On paper, Gunpowder Milkshake possesses all of the ingredients to be a major streaming success. It's got a recognizable star in the lead thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Jumanji's Karen Gillan, a sky high concept with shades of both John Wick and Kill Bill, as well as a supporting cast stuffed to the brim with hugely talented players.

Unfortunately, only subscribers in the United States, Canada and Scandinavia have the opportunity to see the movie at the push of a button, with Netflix only securing exclusive distribution rights for a handful of territories. Everyone else will have to head to their local multiplex to watch Gillan kick all sorts of ass, but the good news is that Gunpowder Milkshake‘s theatrical rollout starts today.

It was reported last week that production company StudioCanal had already placed a sequel into active development, but the director and co-writer of the film isn’t quite as forthcoming. In a new interview, Navot Papushado denied that he’s working on a second installment already, but he did confirm that it’s definitely something he’s thinking about depending on how Gunpowder Milkshake fares.

“My entire focus is on making sure people see it and love it and are passionate about it. Even when you write something that’s such an incredible scene but there’s no room for it, instead of forcing it, you’re like, ‘Okay, let’s put it in the back pocket’. Then when you start working on a follow-up, you have so many ideas. Even when you decide there’s no room for it here, you’re like, ‘Okay, let’s keep it aside’. Actually, if people are going to like it as much as I hope they will, there are screens and theaters and wherever they can see it, I think there’s enough ideas already to put things in motion.

Reviews have been generally solid across the board, with Gunpowder Milkshake holding a decent Rotten Tomatoes score of 67% at the time of writing, although audiences have ranked it at a slightly lower 57%. A combination of Netflix viewership data and box office dollars will no doubt be used to crunch the numbers and determine whether or not further adventures for the female cabal of assassins are a worthwhile investment, so we could be waiting a while until we find out if the band will be getting back together for more high octane and stylish shootouts.
