If you got all excited when Guy Pearce signed on for Iron Man 3, best temper your expectations. In an interview with Vulture to promote his new film, Lawless, Pearce essentially compared his role in the upcoming sequel to his bit part in Prometheus, or in his words — “cameo stuff.”

Pearce was asked about the difference between filming tentpoles now, compared to when he started in 2002’s The Time Machine.

“The main difference was that, when I did The Time Machine, I was pretty much in all of it, so it was a really grueling experience. Prometheus and Iron Man are really kind of cameo stuff, so the experience of shooting them … I mean, on some level, it’s tricky because you feel like a bit of an outsider. You don’t really live the experience that you do when you’re there all day every day with everybody. But at the same time, it can be more fun sometimes because you’re just working in concentrated spurts.”

Pearce will play Aldrich Killian in the film, a scientist who appears in the Iron Man: Extremis comic that invented the Extremis nanobot technology. Iron Man 3 will at least be partially based on that story line.

It’s definitely a little disappointing to hear that Pearce’s part is minor, but with other talents involved such as Sir Ben Kingsley and Rebecca Hall, there shouldn’t be too much to worry about.

When Pearce appeared all made up like an old man to play Peter Weyland in this summer’s Prometheus, it led many to question why even cast him to play a bit part meant for someone much older. Iron Man 3 could leave folks wondering the same thing come May 3rd, 2013.
