Blood-Sucking Vampires

Vampires were recently considered the bastard children of horror thanks to Stephenie Meyer and her Twilight cult, but I think we’re finally in a place where blood-sucking villains can rule once again. There are some seriously biting vampire movies that aren’t on Netflix just yet due to their recent releases, but that doesn’t mean vamp lovers can’t get their fix this Halloween. If pale faces and pointy fangs are your thing, here are a few movies ready for a seasonal scare.
If you’re into the classical fare, look no further than F.W. Murnau’s Nosferatu. Time-hopping all the way back to 1922, you’ll witness Max Schreck embody a lurching vampire with more emphasis than most actors today. It’s a black and white affair that doesn’t hide old age, but this is where it all began.
Other more typical vampire watches can be found in Stake Land and Fright Night, both bringing their own vision to the subgenre. Stake Land is a much grittier, dirtier horror movie that turns vampires into feral, ferocious creatures. Survivors travel by day and search for safe zones, fighting through vampires whenever necessary in Jim Mickle’s second feature. Fright Night, on the other hand, is a jokier flick about a boy who learns his neighbor is a vampire, setting off a mini-battle of sorts as the boy attempts to prove the creature’s existence. It’s Tom Holland’s first directorial feature, eventually remade with Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin squaring off as vampire and human, respectively.
But wait, there’s more! If you’re feeling a bit adventurous, I HIGHLY recommend either Let The Right One In or From Dusk Till Dawn. The first one tells a tender story of friendship between a bullied child and his vampiric new friend, while From Dusk Till Dawn follows a group of misfits who must fight their way out of a bar full of vampire strippers. Is it any surprise that Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino are behind From Dusk Till Dawn?
