Happy Death Day 3 In Development At Blumhouse

Sources close to We Got This Covered have revealed that a Happy Death Day 3 is currently in development over at Blumhouse.

Happy Death Day 2

The novel premise of Happy Death Day was one of the biggest reasons that the 2017 slasher flick became such a huge success, with the film taking in a respectable $125.5 million worldwide on a $4.8 million budget. What’s more, its sequel, Happy Death Day 2U also did fairly well. Though it only earned $64 million off a $9 million budget, that’s still a healthy profit for the studio and it seems it’s enough to push ahead with yet another outing in the franchise.

Not that we’re surprised to learn that, mind you. Director Christopher Landon spoke about his desire to make a Happy Death Day 3 with Entertainment Weekly a while back, teasing the following earlier this year before 2U released:

“I always imagined this as a trilogy,” he said. “So I have the third movie, but it’s just a question of whether this one does well. I would love to make the third one. I think it’s a really bonkers, fun idea.”

Though Blumhouse has yet to make the official announcement, sources close to We Got This Covered confirm that a threequel is definitely in development and again, given that Landon always had plans for a trilogy, there’s no reason to think he won’t get a chance to complete the series.

After all, despite the fact that it wasn’t quite as successful as its predecessor, Happy Death Day 2U proved to be a hot-’n-fresh and often hilarious horror flick, bursting with a live-or-let-die attitude that most critics seem to have enjoyed. It perhaps wasn’t as enjoyable as the first one, but there’s certainly enough story left to mine for a third outing and we’d have no problem with Blumhouse releasing one last film in the series.
