UPDATE: Forbes has asked us to note that though Harley will likely be back, it may not be Robbie playing her.
Earlier this week, an article from Forbes got people talking with its claim that Harley Quinn “is not expected to return” in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, but while the report seemed in line with a previous rumor that had already been making the rounds, it seems that the publication has now heard news to the contrary.
In an amendment added to the same piece about the future of the DCEU, it’s said that Margot Robbie is now expected to reprise her role in Gunn’s follow-up to 2016’s Suicide Squad, with the full update reading as follows:
“UPDATE: I have learned from sources close to production that in fact, the information about Harley Quinn being absent from the new Suicide Squad movie is no longer up to date — she is indeed expected to appear in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, which is expected to begin production later this year.”
Well, there you have it. Though it’s presumably still expected that The Suicide Squad will feature a mostly new cast, it sounds like Robbie is going to be spending even more of 2019 with clown makeup on her face than we previously thought.
Speaking of which, right now Robbie is in the process of filming Birds of Prey, which is set to be Harley’s first big screen outing since the first Suicide Squad. While the same Forbes report denied the recent rumors that Warner Bros. has plans for a Birds of Prey and Gotham City Sirens crossover flick, you can expect Cathy Yan’s film to open more doors for the Clown Princess of Crime if it performs as well as it could, though it’s noteworthy that the Forbes piece hasn’t also retracted the claim that the planned Joker and Harley Quinn spinoff has “fallen by the wayside.”
Regardless, if this latest update has it right, then Harley still has at least two movies left in her. First up is Birds of Prey, which comes out on February 7th, 2020, before The Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 6th, 2021.
