This Hilarious Avengers: Infinity War Scene Was Actually James Gunn’s Idea

Though it's very dramatic and surprisingly dark, Avengers: Infinity War also features a lot of laughs that help diffuse the tension of the overwhelming threat and keep things fun. Naturally, many of the most hilarious moments from the movie come from Star-Lord and co.'s interactions and perhaps the funniest scene involving the cosmic heroes actually originates from the mind of Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn.

Infinity War screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus revealed to ComicBook.com that they “consulted” with the filmmaker, who’s hugely responsible for the success of the Guardians franchise, to share ideas about the characters’ scenes in the team-up movie. In particular, he supplied the premise for one very funny moment.

“We consulted with him, and he gave some suggestions on various Guardians heavy scenes, and there’s one extremely hysterical thing, that’s entirely him.”

As this interview occurred before the premiere of Infinity War, Markus only teased that the scene in question was “poetic” and involved “eating.” Now that we’ve seen the film though, we know which sequence the writer’s talking about.

At one point, Star-Lord and Gamora share a romantic heart to heart, culminating in a kiss. The mood is then punctured by Drax who believed that he was blending into his environment so well that his friends wouldn’t see him. While saying this he was loudly eating a packet of nuts.

It’s a quirky moment that reveals another part of Drax’s eccentric personality, along with his total misunderstanding of metaphors and his extremely sensitive nipples. It feels in keeping with Gunn’s writing style, then, so it’s not a surprise that he came up with the idea. This isn’t the first time that we’ve heard that Gunn helped with the scripting of the Guardians’ material in Avengers: Infinity War, either. After all, he did receive an executive producer credit on the film.
