It was a moment we thought would never come but now, thanks to the recent Fox/Disney deal, the X-Men are on their way to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. How or when they’ll make their debut, we don’t know, but the mutants will soon cross paths with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and we couldn’t be more excited about it.

Of course, the one thing that fans most want to see is Wolverine teaming up with the likes of Iron Man and Captain America. And though Hugh Jackman has unfortunately called it quits with regards to his time in the role, recent reports have seemed to suggest that the actor may find it in himself to return for one final romp as the iconic superhero.

Just last week, for instance, Chris Hemsworth revealed that he was going to try and convince Hugh to come back for the inevitable crossover between the X-Men and the Avengers and now, Hemsworth’s MCU co-star, Sebastian Stan, has apparently spoken to the Logan actor as well, saying that Jackman is thinking about a return.

Granted, Stan was careful not to say too much, and was a bit vague with his comments, but here’s what he had to share during a recent panel at Ace Comic Con when asked about a crossover between Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and the mutants.

“Recently I happened to be sitting next to Hugh Jackman. I didn’t know what other awkward thing I could talk about but to be like, ‘Am I going to see you soon?’ He said a couple of things to me and I’ll just leave it at that. Otherwise, I feel like I’m going to get into trouble with somebody.

I asked him though because I kept thinking whether or not Logan was supposed to be the last Wolverine thing or whatever and he said to me he’s been thinking about it and it’s been on his mind. So, I don’t know, he may be.”

Though far from any sort of confirmation that Jackman has indeed had a change of heart, it’s still surprising to hear that he’s “thinking about it.” After all, it was only the other month when Hugh once again shot down those rumors of him coming back one last time to introduce Wolvie into the MCU, saying that “the ship has sailed.”

“It’s interesting because for the whole 17 years I kept thinking that would be so great, like I would love to see, particularly, Iron Man and the Hulk and Wolverine together,” says Jackman. “And every time I saw an Avengers movie I could just see Wolverine in the middle of all of them like punching them all on the head.

But it was like, ‘Oh well, that’s not gonna happen,’ and it was interesting just when I first saw that headline — it was just the possibility of it and who knows what’s gonna happen, obviously — I was like, ‘Hang on!’ But I think, unfortunately, the ship has sailed for me, but for someone else I would like to see Wolverine in there.”

So, what are we to make of all this? Well, again, it’s clear that Stan is choosing his words carefully here and even says that he’s worried about getting in trouble. With that in mind, perhaps there really has been some talk about Jackman making a return? It’s hard to say for sure, but like we just mentioned, the actor has ruled it out – quite firmly – on more than one occasion now and it’d be very, very surprising to see him come back for more.

Then again, having Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in the MCU, leading the X-Men as they cross paths with the Avengers on the big screen is simply too exciting of an opportunity to pass up – for all parties involved – and it might just be enough to draw the legendary actor back in for one final round as the clawed mutant. Time will ultimately tell, of course, but until we get something concrete, head to the comments section down below and let us know if you think Stan is hinting at a return here.
