Though all signs pointed to him having a cameo role in Bryan Singer’s upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse, it appears that Hugh Jackman is gearing up to don the adamantium claws one final time as Wolverine for James Mangold’s upcoming, as-yet-untitled superhero flick.

Fans of the X-Men franchise will no doubt recognize that name as the director who offered a new lease of life to the age-old character through the release of The Wolverine two years ago. Now, according to Jackman’s post on Instagram, Mangold may be cooking up the actor’s swan song as the fan favorite mutant.

Jackman’s longstanding relationship with the character spans a full fifteen years, when the likeable Aussie bagged the coveted role of Logan back in 2000. Now at the age of 46, it appears as though the actor is ready to call time on his cinematic alter-ego, possibly setting the stage for a younger actor to take the reigns.

Granted, this post doesn’t necessarily rule out his involvement in X-Men: Apocalypse entirely; rather, it seems more likely that Jackman is focusing all efforts on Mangold’s upcoming standalone piece. After all, the role of Wolverine is certainly one of the most physically demanding bills in the industry, so it’s understandable that the actor would want to cross the finish line in style and explore his more versatile acting side through new and exciting roles.

Hugh Jackman is likely to hang up the claws for good when he steps into the shoes of Wolverine one final time for James Mangold. Tell us, are you surprised to hear that the Aussie is ready to step down from the role? Let us know your thoughts down below.
