During the 2013 MTV Movie Awards tonight, the first trailer for The Hunger Games: Catching Fire premiered. Given that this is the first footage from the film, it doesn’t reveal a whole lot but still, it’s nice to finally get some kind of insight into the much anticipated sequel.

Admittedly, I didn’t love The Hunger Games. I really enjoyed the books but unfortunately, the film didn’t impress me. Sure, it had its moments but overall, I didn’t care for it and it paled in comparison to the novel. I suppose that’s usually the case when books are turned into films but for some reason this one just really didn’t sit right with me. It may be because the film didn’t take any risks and played it too safe, or maybe because there were too many missed opportunities. Whatever it was, I just didn’t care much for The Hunger Games.

That being said, Catching Fire is my favorite book in the series and I’ve always thought that it would make for the best film out of the three. Judging by the trailer, I think I may be right. To be honest, I’m impressed with the brief glimpse we’ve been given here. Of course, it’d be foolish to base things off just a trailer alone but from what I can tell, I think Francis Lawrence’s film is going to fare much better than its predecessor.

Then again, The Hunger Games had a pretty impressive trailer as well, so who knows?

As mentioned, not a whole lot was shown in this trailer but I did enjoy getting a look at the rebellion going on in the Districts, it looks like they’ve captured that quite well. Another plus is Philip Seymour Hoffman, who looks like he’s going to be excellent in the film as Plutarch Heavensbee. The scenes between him and Donald Sutherland were my favorite part of the trailer. The whole atmosphere and tone looks a lot darker and more mature too, which is something I’m definitely happy to see. Maybe they won’t play it as safe this time around.

Overall, despite the fact that the preview was a good length (2 and a half minutes), I feel like they didn’t give too much away or even show a whole lot, which is a good thing. From the footage that was revealed here though, I think we’re in for a treat.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire stars Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson. It hits theatres on November 22nd, 2013. Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments section.
