Look, I’ll be honest, as a straight white dude staring down the barrel of my mid-twenties – you probably don’t give a crap what I think about Barbie anyway, but on the off chance that you do… I’m the type of guy who likes to consider himself about as “plugged in” as anyone, and from personal experience – I’ve met a ton of dudes who are super stoked to check out Greta Gerwig’s latest comedy.
This ain’t 1823 or even 1923, it’s frikken’ 2023. Men have evolved. Well, sort of. The reality is that, these days, people of all types defy convention. Sure, I might lift weights and drink protein, but also enjoy a nice house slipper (they’re fabulous). I’ve also been known to binge-watch Love Island from time to time, and used to go to my grandma’s every week to gossip about her neighbors. Don’t even get me started.
So I’m not sure who’s still whispering about Barbie, but cut it out. It’s starting to annoy everyone. Seriously. Whispering isn’t even that fun anyway – right? We all should be shouting our admiration from the rooftops as far as I’m concerned. Go see this movie!
Thankfully, there’s a man out there much more equipped to get guys to the theater, and for good reason – he’s in the darn thing. In an exclusive interview with Extra, actor Ryan Gosling gave his best sales pitch for why folks should go see this movie.
“There is so much in this for the Kens. So many guys come up to me and whisper they want to see the Barbie movie. I don’t know why we are whispering. It is okay, it’s okay to want to see it, it’s great.”
Great is about the only word I needed to hear, because to tell you the truth – it’s the only one that matters. Good story is as good story does. If it’s good, people will find their way to it. If it’s not, they won’t. Simple. So long as Margot Robbie and co. do all they can to make this movie shine, I think things will be all right.
“Barbie’s been a cultural icon for my whole life. Now, it’s time to show up and pay our respects to the queen.”
There’s no debating it. Barbie (as a character), like it or not, has been around for longer than plenty of us have been alive. I mean look at her. At 64 years old, she’s still got it. No one on Earth can honestly say they haven’t come into contact with a Barbie doll, and all I can say is – come on Barbie, let’s go party, and go see Barbie in theaters on July 21 while you’re at it.
