Despite the action-packed scenarios and scintillating characters, it’s quite obvious that a plethora of directors in Hollywood are under the assumption that the Marvel realm is nothing but a cash-grabbing exercise that delivers underwhelming projects. Given the ever-growing popularity of Marvel movies ever since Iron Man kickstarted the MCU back in 2008, it’s not too difficult to understand why some directors might not share a bubbling interest in the sub-genre — which is essentially how Sean Baker feels.
In a recent interview with Kinotico (via World of Reel), the 52-year-old filmmaker revealed that in the aftermath of 2021’s Red Rocket gaining praise and traction, big-time blockbuster offers “abruptly stopped.” On that same note, Baker made mention of directing Marvel movies and how you truly have to be committed to spending several years on a project of that caliber — to which Baker insisted that he doesn’t actually “like Marvel movies enough” to direct one of the films.

And while Baker didn’t come right out and specifically vocalize that Marvel had reached out in the past about him directing one of the films, it wouldn’t come as a huge surprise if Baker was offered the job and simply turned it down due to simply not being interested. After all, the director who turned down Black Widow recently shamed the MCU movie as “very ugly.”
Of course, with a strong lineup of directors such as Martin Scorsese, Denis Villeneuve, and James Cameron criticizing Marvel movies in the past, it’s clear that the MCU is building a head-turning list of industry detractors who would rather leave the superhero genre untouched.
